INTRACORNEAL RINGS FOR KERATOCONUS

Keratoconus is a leading cause of corneal blindness and a common indication for corneal transplant. One of the most effective methods of visual rehabilitation in keratoconus patients is rigid contact lenses, but a high percentage of these patients are contact-lenses intolerant. Intracorneal ring segments tend to preserve corneal asphericity (normal shape of the cornea), which contributes to better visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. This procedure avoids or at least delays corneal transplants in keratoconus patients.
