Eye pressure matters, but it is not the only factor

Although elevated intraocular pressure is one of the main risk factors, some people develop glaucoma with pressure values considered normal.

That is why a glaucoma evaluation may require more than a simple eye pressure measurement. The specialist examines the optic nerve and various characteristics of each patient to determine their level of risk.

Who should pay special attention?

A specialized evaluation is recommended if:

• You have a family history of glaucoma.
• You have been found to have elevated eye pressure.
• You have changes in the optic nerve.
• You have lost peripheral vision.
• You use certain medications, such as corticosteroids, for long periods.
• Risk factors were identified during an eye exam.
• You already have a glaucoma diagnosis and need follow-up.

How is it treated?

Treatment depends on the type of glaucoma, its stage and each patient's individual response. It may include:

• Treatment with medication.
• Laser procedures.
• Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery.
• Traditional surgery to control intraocular pressure.
• Combined procedures for patients who have other eye conditions, such as cataracts.

The goal is not simply to reach a particular eye pressure, but to protect the optic nerve and reduce the risk of further vision loss.
