Cornea

What is a cornea transplant?

The cornea is the transparent structure at the front of the eye. For you to see clearly, it must keep an adequate shape and transparency. Various diseases, injuries, infections or progressive disorders can damage it and cause blurred vision, distortion, light sensitivity or a significant decrease in visual ability.

When corneal damage is advanced and other treatments can no longer restore adequate visual function, a cornea transplant may become an alternative.

This procedure consists of replacing diseased or damaged corneal tissue with healthy corneal tissue from a donor. Depending on which structures are affected, the specialist determines which approach is right for each patient.

Cornea transplant

In which cases can a cornea transplant be considered?

It may be considered in patients with conditions such as:

  • Advanced keratoconus.
  • Scarring or loss of corneal transparency.
  • Corneal damage caused by infections or trauma.
  • Diseases affecting the inner layers of the cornea.
  • Persistent corneal edema.
  • Complications from previous eye surgery.
  • Corneal disorders that can no longer be adequately corrected with glasses, contact lenses or other treatments.

Not every patient with corneal disease needs a transplant. That is why the first step is a detailed evaluation of the cornea to assess its structure, transparency, thickness and overall condition.
